FAQs: Do we qualify for NHS IVF treatment? How many NHS cycles could we do?
To qualify for NHS funded IVF cycles you need to be referred by your GP (whereas you don’t need a GP referral for private consultations or treatment). Guidelines have been published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) that include criteria to help decide if a couple qualifies for NHS IVF treatment. You should also be aware that local funding for this varies across the UK and is determined by the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).
If you live in the North East of England, depending on your local funding and how well you match the funding criteria, you could be eligible for up to 3 NHS IVF cycles. For more information on these criteria, please visit the following pages on the HFEA and the NHS websites.
We suggest that you see your GP as the first point of contact to help you decide if assisted reproduction (e.g. IVF) is the right option for you and to see if you qualify for NHS funded cycles prior to seeking the private route.
